How does coaching work?
Coaching is a tool for identifying goals and creating a plan to reach them. As part of that process, we consider your strengths, skills, passions, and motivations. We identify obstacles and patterns that may stand in your way. Together, we map out a path to help you get from here to wherever you want to go. Then, we create action steps for getting there. During coaching, you try out these steps in real time. At our meetings, we discuss what works, what doesn’t, and what else we need to do to get you closer to your goals.
What kinds of goals can we focus on in coaching? Coaching is flexible. It’s about the process. And, the process can be applied to many aspects of life. Here are some potential goals:
Career transitions: Going back to work, moving from one job/career to another, reclaiming your passion for your work, finding direction after high school, college, or graduate studies.
Work/Life Balance: Setting boundaries around work, accessing hidden time in your schedule, creating time in your schedule for your passions and goals.
Regaining Joy and Purpose: Gaining clarity around where you want to go, what you want to do, and how you want to live your life.
Family and Life Planning: Making decisions around family, work, community, moving, etc.
Transitions: Managing changes at work and at home; understanding life transitions (pregnancy, partnering, divorce, death of a parent, menopause, illness, etc)
Creating structure: Planning, scheduling, breaking big projects down into small steps, etc.
Don’t see your goal on the list and wondering if coaching can help you? Email me! (email@example.com) We can set up a time to talk about your questions.
What does coaching feel like? Coaching feels exciting and energizing. People often enter coaching because they feel stuck or unfulfilled, recognize that something is not working in their lives, or know that they want to make a change but realize that something is keeping them back. Coaching can help you move in the right direction and take action to get to where you want to go. It can also provide clarity. We’ll do exercises to help you figure out where you want to get to. Coaching also takes work! You will challenge yourself, think about things in new ways, examine things that are keeping you stuck, acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, and push yourself outside your comfort zone. Check out the testimonials below to read more about coaching.
What does this package include?
6 hours of meetings (either in-person or via video chat) that last between 30 and 90 minutes each. We will determine the length and frequency of the meetings according to your needs. I am located in Boston, but you don’t have to be. Video-chat meetings are easy and productive!
We will talk, brainstorm and use creative activities to gain new perspectives on old situations. We will do these activities with the goal of better understanding where you want to go and what you need to do to get there.
At the end of each meeting, we will develop 2-4 action steps that you will take to get you closer to your goal. These action steps may include: exercises to expand your thinking, questions to contemplate, research to gain a better understanding, actions to begin changing the situation.
We will collaborate. Each step is something we create together.
After each session, I will email you a personalized summary of our work together, including important themes, assignments, goals, etc.
Between sessions, we may check in around questions, accomplishments, obstacles, etc.
Our work together will take place in a judgment-free zone. Your life is yours to live as you see fit. My job is to help you live that life.

What are clients saying about coaching?
I reached out to Melissa because a family member forwarded me an email about her coaching work, and I am SO glad I took the leap to start life coaching with Melissa. From the very beginning, Melissa has been responsive, helpful, compassionate, and encouraging. I live in the Midwest and I didn't think that it was possible to engage in meaningful coaching dialogue over video chat, but I was wrong! Melissa is engaging, insightful, and in our sessions it feels like she's right across the table from me. In just over a month of individual sessions, Melissa has helped me navigate huge obstacles that were holding me back from what I wanted to achieve. Melissa has this way of asking just the right questions to re-frame a struggle into a strength, or suggesting an exercise that opens up a new way to approach major roadblocks. Melissa has given me the tools I've needed to make immense progress in my personal life, and our one-on-one sessions help refine and assert the goals that I want to build towards. I highly recommend signing up for coaching sessions with Melissa- I feel more in control, I am making positive change in my life, and I'm blazing a new path for myself that, a few months ago, I didn't think was possible!

Melissa and I have come up with strategies to undo, or maybe I should say redo, some of the counterproductive habits I’ve developed to manage my demanding job. I love that Melissa doesn’t impose a plan or methodology on me, but instead works collaboratively with me to create the plan, based on my values and my goals. She holds me accountable, but in a nonjudgmental way. I felt like I was barely treading water before, but working with Melissa has helped me feel hopeful about the future.

I can't believe how helpful the coaching has been. I'm the kind of person who thinks about making a change for a very long time. Too long. I have trouble actually putting my ideas into practice. I can do it at work, or when it's for someone else, but it's really hard to do on my own when it's for myself. So the coaching has been a kind yet firm hand, guiding me forward, one manageable step at a time. Melissa is an amazing facilitator. Sometimes she asks questions to get us engaged and to wrangle with the topic, and sometimes she provides information and asks us to respond. She's professional and she comes to our session(s) prepared, but also has built-in flexibility, so if something takes longer than expected she adjusts (and it looks effortless). Every week I come to new realizations that I am sure would not have happened without the coaching. I'm keeping a notebook and I can see how my thinking has changed over the weeks.

I entered the coaching sessions nervous because: I'd never done a group coaching session before; I hadn't previously envisioned using such outside help for my transition back into the workforce and related job search; and, I didn't know how I'd fare in this new activity for the multi-week duration while also juggling my other obligations. Despite this apprehension, my experience in the coaching sessions was very positive, motivating, and useful. The sessions emboldened me and provided clarity to the path(s) to my goals. I gained the gumption and direction to launch my job search, and I progressed further in a shorter period of time - and sooner - than I would have if working on my own. I also enjoyed the camaraderie, support, and input from my fellow coaching session attendees. Melissa creates a comfortable, challenging, and effective working atmosphere for her coaching sessions.

I had years of therapy after my divorce and still felt fairly stuck. Good life, but not as vibrant as I desired to be. I felt ready to go from idea to action and wanted a collaborator. I asked the “Universe” for help and received Melissa’s email three days later describing her new endeavor. Coaching felt like an Answer! Melissa’s format is very helpful to me: getting an overview to start, some specific goals and strategies to see how ready I was, feedback after each session, self-reflection before the next session. Melissa asks useful questions, nudging me along in my resistance without inducing reactivity. I want to work from love, not should, and Melissa totally understands that stance. What is in the way of loving myself? Six sessions started some new habits around moving (exercise) and perceiving myself with more clarity. I have recommended her to my friends looking for help in working through something. Allow yourself the support and delight of Melissa.
